The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe. Its mission is to foster, coordinate, develop and promote scientific and technological research, of a multidisciplinary nature, in order to contribute to advancing knowledge and economic, social and cultural development, as well as to train staff and advise public and private entities on this matter.

The Estación Experimental de Aula Dei (EEAD) is a Research Institute of the CSIC and is devoted to Agricultural Sciences. The EEAD mission is to provide the agricultural sector with the appropriate materials and technologies in order to increase competitiveness and sustainability, through a deeper knowledge of basic processes of the plant-environment system. In this project, the “Nutrition of Fruit Crops Research Group” belonging to Plant Nutrition Department from EEAD is responsible for carrying out the research.

The goal of the “Nutrition of Fruit Crops Research Group” is to introduce new technologies for the fruit industry to increase the quality of fruits throughout the development of sustainable production techniques. Our studies are aimed at the optimization of the physiological processes that govern the characteristics of productivity and quality of deciduous fruit species, following a holistic approach. In this framework, we investigate the basic aspects of water and nutrient absorption by monitoring their distribution and physiological functions in plants. Moreover, new cultural methods developed to mitigate the huge economic and environmental losses due to lack of quality and shelf live shortage of commodities. In parallel, we are also developing a rational cultivar strategy to ensure performance, quality, and profitability, while minimizing environmental impact.
